Kuling-/stormvarsel for kyst og nære fiskebanker
See English below.

Gale/storm warning for the coast and nearby fishing banks
Over open sea, the mean wind (average wind over 10 minutes) is a good measure of the danger level. The wind is more predictable than over land, although strong gusts can also occur over the sea in connection with showers and frontal passages.
For seafarers, separate gale warnings are issued for the coast when the mean wind is expected to reach at least near gale force 7 and for the nearby fishing banks when gale force 8 is expected.
Near gale force 7, with the rough wave and current conditions that may accompany it, is dangerous for small boats and presents challenging conditions for coastal fishermen, with the risk of material loss.
For seafarers, it is essential to stay informed about the current weather forecasts. Gale and storm warnings are distributed through various channels, including dedicated radio channels (Telenor Coastal Radio/VHF and NRK Yr/DAB). The need for color-coded warnings is not the same as over land, but to ensure widespread communication, Norwegian gale and storm warnings are also distributed in the CAP format with a yellow color (regardless of wind speed). Gale and storm warnings are issued only with a probability of more than 50% for the forecasted wind strength.
