Impact-based hazard warning for society (K2S)
Everyone can check Yr, but understanding what the forecast means for you in practice is not necessarily as easy. When severe weather conditions occur, it is important that all societal actors know what to do. In order to warn in line with the perceived consequences for the users, the Meteorological Institute needs to know the societal actors well and know what they need. This is one of the goals of the project "Consequence-based warning for society" (K2S).
Provide societal actors and the population better support in dealing with dangerous weather conditions
– The overall project goal is to give society better access to consequence-based weather forecasts, so that protective measures can be implemented to safeguard life and property, says project leader Ina Kindem.
The Meteorological Institute collaborates with many emergency preparedness actors in the event of orange and red level hazard warnings. With this project, the institute wishes to both strengthen existing cooperation and enter into new ones, for example with local emergency preparedness.
– The Meteorological Institute will further develop the work with hazard warnings and learn more about consequences, effects, and events related to severe weather conditions in a local context. This knowledge must be included in the warning communication so that society can benefit from it, says Kindem.
The project has five sub-goals
- Map the effects of severe weather
- Improve user understanding so that recipients understand the warnings and the risk, and act when necessary
- Evaluate the hazard warnings
- Improve the warning process
- Learn from other actors, for example from other meteorological institutes in Europe
